n-Butyl alcohol occurs naturally as a minor product of the fermentation of sugars and other carbohydrates and is present in many foods and beverages. It can also be used as an artificial flavorant in butter, ice cream and baked goods. The largest use of n-butanol is as an industrial intermediate in the production of butyl esters. It is manufactured from propylene.
