CH76: Sulfuric Acid reacts with polyethylene over timeCategory: Product Specific | Updated: 1/3/2007 2:26:32 PM | Owner: Donna M. The amount of partially polymerized resin is a function of resin quality and the container molding process. Concentrated sulfuric acid reacts with the partially polymerized resin in a two step process:1. Liquid oxidative degradation 2. Diffusion of the sulfuric acid into the polymeric matrix This reaction may cause a discoloration (darkening) of the sulfuric acid and an increase in substances reducing permanganate which tends to progress over time. A six month shelf life provides a conservative time frame in order to maintain the ACS and SEMI specifications for color and substances reducing permanganate.
